My great-grandmother Maria or Marika Tegze Balabancuk was born in 1857 in Berezna, Máramaros, Hungary. She married Ivan Papp before 1873. She died 6 July 1920 in Berezova, Czechoslovakia. When I was growing up the village she was born, married and died in was Berezovo, Ukraine, USSR. Today it is Berezovo, Zakarpats’ka oblast’, Ukraine or to be completely accurate Березово, Закарпатська область, Україна.

ReplyDeleteNo idea on the occasion, Celia. It is on a postcard similar to the photographs other relatives mailed in the early 20th c. My guess would be that her children who left or were leaving home wanted her picture.

ReplyDeleteMarika is just beautiful. I love her high, wide cheekbones and her general appearance of sturdiness. I wonder what her personality was like. She looks very serious but as I was studying her face, I had the impression of a smile just after the camera clicked.
