My great-grandmother Maria or Marika Tegze Balabancuk was born in 1857 in Berezna, Máramaros, Hungary. She married Ivan Papp before 1873. She died 6 July 1920 in Berezova, Czechoslovakia. When I was growing up the village she was born, married and died in was Berezovo, Ukraine, USSR. Today it is Berezovo, Zakarpats’ka oblast’, Ukraine or to be completely accurate Березово, Закарпатська область, Україна.
A genealogy blog focused on families settling in East Tennessee and the Northern Neck of Virginia with explorations of Rusyn roots.

FANTASTIC photo! WOWSERS!!
ReplyDeleteWonderful photo, Susan - do you know the "event" re the photo being taken? Lovely photo!
ReplyDeleteNo idea on the occasion, Celia. It is on a postcard similar to the photographs other relatives mailed in the early 20th c. My guess would be that her children who left or were leaving home wanted her picture.
DeleteWhat a treasure that photograph must be!
ReplyDeleteAmazing how many places one can be without taking a step. Oh, the wonders of politics!
This is a wonderful photo. You are so lucky to have it. Do you mind if I ask, how did you get the translation into cyrillic? I will admit, the cyrillic thing intimidates me when it comes to pursuing my husband's family back into the old country...
ReplyDeleteMother Google, Cynthia. I used Google Translate from English to Ukrainian. I use it ALL the time.
DeleteWhat a wonderful old photo!

I am catching up on my blog reading. I don't know how I missed this picture. You know how much I enjoy learning about Hungarian ancestry.
ReplyDeleteMarika is just beautiful. I love her high, wide cheekbones and her general appearance of sturdiness. I wonder what her personality was like. She looks very serious but as I was studying her face, I had the impression of a smile just after the camera clicked.
ReplyDeleteI also have to say I'm impressed with your Ukranian letters (even if they are from Google Translate!).
